Early Sunday ceremony features 9/11 flag

The National 9/11 Flag will be displayed by Joplin first responders and area first responders in a silent tribute at 8:58 a.m. CST through 9:28 a.m. CST on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Joplin's Cunningham Park at the corner of 26th Street & Maiden Lane. The two times correspond to the exact moments that the South Towers and North Towers of the World Trade Center were hit. From there, The National 9/11 Flag will be processed to Leggett & Platt Auditorium on the campus of Missouri Southern State University where the flag will serve as the backdrop for a 9/11 Memorial Service beginning at 10:30 a.m.

People who are wishing to attend the event at Cunningham Park should arrive by 8:30 a.m. CST. Parking will be allowed in the neighborhoods as well as in the 2700 block of McClelland where several medical offices used to be. An area will be provided in the park for those that are attending where they can see the flag as it is being held by first responders.

Roads around Cunningham Park will be closed due to the event and citizens not attending the event should find alternate routes. Police Officers will be posted at these intersections and can assist citizens with finding alternate routes around the park. Motorists should avoid:
