Dr. Huff vies for state commissioner position

Update: Following interviews with five finalists, the State Board of Education voted unanimously to select Dr. Margaret Vandeven as the next Commissioner of Education, effective January 1, 2015. Board members cited Dr. Vandevens strong background in education and extensive knowledge of education policy at the state and federal level as preparing her for the position. Her proven leadership in multiple capacities in the Department shows she is ready for the challenge. They also cited her drive and determination to make the Top 10 by 20 plan a reality.

Dr. Charles J. Huff, current superintendent of R-8 schools is one of five people that has been selected as a finalist for the position of Missouri Commissioner of Education. The State Board of Education met in executive session on December 5, 2014, to narrow the field from a dozen applicants who were part of 40 whose names were submitted in November.

"The State Board members are looking for the person who can make Missouri a top 10 state for education by 2020," said Board President Peter Herschend (Think Silver Dollar City). "We believe we have a strong list of finalists, and we will find the right person to lead us there."

The other contenders who will be interviewed in Jefferson City within the week are: Terry R. Adams, Ph.D., Lake Saint Lewis, previous superintendent in Rockwood and Wentzille School districts; Douglas D. Hayter, Ed.D., Walnut Shade, serving as superintendent in the Branson School District; Norman F. Ridder, Ed.D., of Imperial, serving as interim superintendent of Mehlville School District and former superintendent in Springfield School District; and Margaret M. Vandeven, Ph.D. of O'Fallon, serving as deputy commissioner of education, division of learning services and served as assistant commissioner of the office of quality schools.

The current Commissioner of Education, Chris L. Nicastro is retiring effective December 31, 2014.
