JPD has announced its next Citizens Police Academy mstewart
Updated: 2012-07-16 15:30:37
The Joplin Police Department hosts an exciting 12-week Citizens Police Academy. This program targets people in the area who want to learn more about the Joplin Police Department. Offered free of charge, this hands-on, interactive, behind-the-scenes program is taught by experienced police officers, who share their unique perspective on law enforcement.

The classes will be held every Thursday night starting August 23, 2012, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Concluding on November 15, 2012, with a graduation ceremony and dinner, the CPA will be held at various locations throughout the city. Class size will be limited to approximately 25 participants.

Topics covered will include: crime analysis, crime scene investigations, narcotics investigations, child abuse investigations, traffic crash investigations, vehicle stops, SWAT operations and equipment, use of force tactics, building clearing, DWI enforcement, and an introduction to the K9 unit.

Why the Citizens Police Academy?

The concept of the Citizens Police Academy involves opening the Joplin Police Department to the public, and showing citizens exactly what the responsibilities are and how they are carried out. As a result, graduates of the Citizens Police Academy are better equipped to assess safety issues and share with others their knowledge of law enforcement practices and policies.

Given the commitment to the community and proactive problem-solving, the department sees the Citizens Police Academy as an effective way of bringing law enforcement and the public together in an informal, educational forum. The benefits of such a partnership can only help strengthen the entire community in terms of public safety and quality of life.

Interested persons are encouraged to contact the Special Enforcement Bureau of the Joplin Police Department at (417) 627-8880, or submit the application attached. An application may also be obtained here or at the front desk of the Joplin Police Department, 303 E. 3rd St.
