Second bike/pedestrrian trail to be scenic
October 07, 2014
Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation (MoBikeFed) members and supporters got the word...and Brent Hugh, group president, wanted to share it.....He believes it to be reason to celebrate. Ameren, through its subsidiary, the Missouri Central Railroad Company, has agreed to railbank the entire Rock Island Line from Beaufort (near Washington, MO) west. That means that Missouri could have a second cross-state trail, one with a tall open trestle bridge spanning the Gasconade River and a long tunnel under the town of Freeburg in Osage County. The 213 mile Rock Island Trail- would rival the Katy Trail. When completed, the Rock Island Trail State Park would interconnect with the Katy Trail in two places, making a 453-mile trail system stretching across Missouri. "Of course, today is a starting point," Hugh said, "and the trail is not done until it's done." He aks for everyone's support "to make sure everything stays on track until that 450 miles of trail is complete to the last mile."
