Murpheysburg's DickensFest is Dec. 12-14

The fifth annual Dickensfest in Joplin promises to be a fun for the whole family festival, according to historic Murpheysburg Preservation, Inc., sponsor of the event. Everyone is encouraged to come in 1840s period costumes.

The event opens on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, with a grand reception from 6-9 p.m. in the tea room of the historic Scottish Rite Cathedral, 505 S. Byers Ave. Featured will be a buffet of hors d'oeuvres and drinks, entertainment and a tour of the building. Admission is $15 per person with tickets sold at the door.

Events continuing on Saturday, Dec. 13 and Sunday, Dec. 14, from 2-8 p.m. will center around the Scottish Rite Cathedral, the John Wise Mansion at 504 S. Byers Ave.and Joplin's Murpheysburg historic residential district. A series of short performances in the Scottish Rite Cathedral concert hall will feature the Briley Performing Arts Company, Karen's Dance Studio, the Missouri Shakespeare Festival players, Pinocchio School of Dance and members of the Midwest Regional Ballet and Heartland Opera. Admission is $3 per adult. Pipe organ music periodically will be performed on the towering Moeller organ, only one of four installed west of the Mississippi.

Dickensfest in the neighborhood also will feature Dream Theater Company performers; "streets of London" flash mobs; winter lights; costumed Dickens characters; indoor and outdoor food, craft and art vendors; "Carol-okee"; a live nativity scene; petting zoo; visits with Mr. and Mrs. Claus; face painting; balloon art; magicians; trackless train rides and more. No admission will be charged. Tickets may be purchased for horse-drawn carriage rides ($5 per person).
