April 13, 2015

Trumpeter Bobby Shew, pictured, will perform a Tribute to Miles Davis and John Coltrane in a jazz concert presented by Pro Musica-Joplin. The event will take place beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2015, at Corley Auditorium on the campus of Missouri Southern State University-Joplin.

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Shew began playing the guitar at the age of 8 and switched to the trumpet at 10. By the time he was 13 he was playing with a number of bands at local dances. By 15 he had put together his own group, expanding his venues to coffee houses and occasional concerts. He spent most of his high school days playing as many as six nights a week at a dinner club, kickstarting his professional career early.

Shew spent three years as the jazz trumpet soloist in the famed NORAD multi-service band and then went on to play with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Sam Donahue and together with trumpet legend Charlie Shavers. He also joined Woody Herman's band and played for Della Reese and Bobby Rich whose big band had just been formed.

Elected into the New Mexico Hall of Fame, Shew has had numerous Grammy nominations. In 1982 he received the Jazz Album of the Year award.

In addition to performing, Shew conducts clinics and master classes at high schools and college campuses all over the world. He also has been active on the Board of Governors of the International Trumpet Guild and acted as National Trumpet Chairman for the International Association of Jazz Educators.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students. They may be purchased at the Pro Musica office, Suite 502, 402 S. Main, Joplin. For hours phone (417) 625-1822.
