Proposed park needs a name
October 07, 2015
The landscape at the southeast corner of 26th and McClelland Boulevard in Joplin will soon change as construction of the city's newest park begins with a completion date of May 2016. What to name the new park is now the subject of a Joplin Public Park Naming Contest.

Citizens are asked to submit two names for consideration and a brief description of why each name is appropriate for the park. Entry cards to submit recommendations are available at the Joplin Athletic Complex, Main Lobby of Joplin City Hall, and the Reference Desk of Joplin Public Library. Submissions should be delivered or mailed to Joplin Park Naming Contest, Attn: Planning, 4th Floor, Joplin City Hall, 602 S. Main, Joplin, MO, 64801. Citizens may also e-mail the entry information here or call (417) 624-0820, ext. 541. All entries are due by 5 p.m., Monday, Nov. 9, 2015.

Discussion and final selection of the park name will be completed by a staff committee. The person who submitted the selected name for the park will be recognized, as well as participate, in the groundbreaking ceremony for the park. The date of this event is yet to be determined.

This 16-acre park will include native landscapes and green space with trails, a large pond, restrooms, and pavilion. It will be located on land that was part of the former location of St. Johns Regional Medical Center and was donated to the City by Mercy Hospital.
