Organic gardening conference is Feb. 4-6, 2016

All food growers, farmers or hobbyists, are invited to attend the 7th annual Missouri Organic Conference. It will be held from February 4-6, 2016, at the University Plaza Hotel and Conference Center, 333 S. John Q. Hammons Pkwy., Springfield. Featured will be a broad spectrum of lectures, hands-on workshops and networking opportunities. The topics will include: grain production, livestock production, commercial Vegetable production, high-tunnel small fruits and vegetable production, sustainable living skills and culinary and medicinal plans.

A workshop on "Raising Sexy, Exotic Crops for Fun and Profit" will be conducted by Joseph Simcox, Baker Creek's botanical explorer, who will be emphasizing plant selection for propagation suitable for farmers in Missouri and surrounding states. Keynote speakers include "Arden Anderson, DO/PhD, presenting on "Healthy Soils, Healthy Bodies" and John Ikerd, PhD, presenting on Healthy Soils, Healthy Economies, Healthy Communities.

In a top chef competition six premier chefs from St. Louis, Columbia, Kansas City and Springfield will compete on Friday. A special networking event that connects organic farmers/producers with buyers and marketing managers from the food industry will take place on Saturday.

One of the surprises prepared for this year is the Consumer Health Education Seminary, scheduled for Saturday and open to the general public. The discussion will focus on organic foods and their connection to a healthy diet and balanced nutrition. The session will be presented by dieticians and medical physicians and will include definitions and discussion regarding health food terminology.Guests will learn about the difference between organic, non-GMO, natural foods, free range, cage free, etc.
