Shakespeare festival needs benefactors
February 16, 2016
A wine and dessert reception to benefit the Missouri Shakespeare Festival will take place beginning at 7:30 p.m. on April 30, 2016, in the Connor Ballroom of the Bilingsley Student Center on the campus of Missouri Southern State University in Joplin. Featured are performances (vote for your favorite), desserts and a silent auction. Directing the 2016 event, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is Dr. Jim Lile. It is scheduled foor June 23-26.

Although last year's production cost a minimum of $5,000 to stage, organizers this year hope to raise $25,000 in order to provide a stipend for company members, plus assistance with travel, food and lodging for those who need it. Funds previously only were used for costumes, lighting, props, set design materials and promotion.

"All along, the backbone of our enterprise has been the willingness of talented people to volunteer their time and energy (to the annual production)," Lile said. "We want to bring in a company of 12 and make them fully stipendiary. Our goal is to become a really attractive place for actors to want to come and spend a month."

For those wishing to support Lile's effort, send a check payable to the Missouri Southern Foundation/Missouri Shakespeare Festival Project, 3950 E. Newman Rd., Joplin, MO 64801. Write "Missouri Shakespeare Festival" on the check.
